Daily reflections: Friday: June 19/15

Gospel Matthew 6:19... in today\'s Gospel Jesus challenge the people, and others, to take a look at what are the accumulated as they make their journey through life. Jesus said,” do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, or why I must consume, but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven are neither moth nor rust consumes”. It seems that we spend the first half of our life and accumulating things, skills and accomplishments, reputation and image, money and pension, and friends. In the second half of life now that we have accumulated so much we are now faced with having to let go much of what we have accumulated and downsize. Now it\'s time to take a look at what really matters and what is lasting as we look forward to our entrance into eternity. Some people, because of their insecurity and attachments find it difficult and sometimes impossible to let go, yet the day will come when it will be all taken away and then we have no choice. It is by the grace of God that we are able to accept the diminishment in our life due to aging and ill health. When we can accept life as it is then we are able to let go and have a new found freedom on the other side for the rest of our life. Here, to do this, we really do have to trust God and continue to do the best to live life and not just prepare for death.

Reflection: you struggle with letting go?

Prayer: Jesus, your words remind me that I must let go the treasures which I have accumulated because I know it\'ll be taken away for me eventually. However, there are treasures which I can take with me into eternity... my love for God and for people and for the earth, the acts kindness and thoughtfulness, the times I stood by others who are carrying a heavy burden, the times I forgave others and ask for forgiveness... these are some of the things which I can take with me when I have completed my life journey here and move onto a new life. Amen
