Daily reflections: Monday: May 25/15

Gospel: Mark 10:17... one day as Jesus was walking along the road man ran up to him, now before him and asked him “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life? Jesus said to him, “why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone.” Those words would have shocked the questioner because he like a lot of the people at treating goodness to Jesus. Even today, many friends of Jesus struggle, unsuccessfully, to be good. They find out no matter how are they trying to be good they still make mistakes for which they are both sorry for and regret. People forget that they are human, they are incomplete, and so they have to be so accepting of their humanity. Those who cannot accept their incomplete humanity often live with guilt and fear that this is not what God wants since God wants everybody to know that they are loved unconditionally even in the face of their mistakes. It is important that we come to learn to accept our humanity with all the strengths and weaknesses, this is what it means to be human, and rather than trying to be good, that means making, we set ourselves up for failure. Jesus never said a perfect, what he did say was, love one another as I have loved you, become passionate as best you can grace of God.

Reflection: how do you handle your mistakes?

Prayer: Jesus the teacher, you take the burden off us when you tell us that you did not see your self as good and you also did not tell us to try to be good but rather choose to live a life of compassion and kindness. I have to learn to accept myself as I am, accept my humanity as it, or forgive myself when I make a mistake, and focus on the positive which is to t love myself, love people, love animals and plants and trees and flowers and especially the love mother Earth. Amen
