Daily reflections: Friday: February 27/15

Gospel: Matthew 5:20... in today\'s Gospel once more we find Jesus teaching his disciples, they are the people who must be enlightened and empowered to carry on his ministry after he departs from them. The disciples have up to the scribes and Pharisees for their faith story and their spirituality. However, Jesus shocks that when he says, “unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and the Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven “. For Catholics, this would be like Jesus saying your spirituality doesn\'t exceed that of the pope and the priest will never make it into the kingdom. What Jesus is saying here is that each person must take his/her responsibility for all spirituality and not depend or become dependent upon the clergy. For authentic spirituality a person must take the right steps in order to deepen their relationship with God and Jesus so that they can be critical thinkers, trust their intuition, and follow the properties of the Holy Spirit on how we choose to live their life day by day. Therefore, friends of Jesus, even today, must take personal responsibility for their spiritual growth and transformation and no one can do this work for any of us.

Reflection: do you take personal responsibility for your spiritual growth and transformation?

Prayer: Jesus, you gave good advice to your disciples and the same advice applies to us today. I pray that I will take seriously my responsibility for my own spiritual growth and by trusting my inner spirit I will live from the inside out not the outside in. Amen
