Daily reflections: Ash Wednesday: February 18/15

Gospel: Matthew 6:1... Ash Wednesday marks the 40 days of Lent lead up to holy Thursday, good Friday, and Easter Sunday, known as the Paschal mystery. Over the years Catholics have been encouraged to give alms for the poor, too fast from various activities and to pray. In today\'s Gospel Matthew has Jesus saying to his disciples, “beware of practicing your piety before people in order to be seen by them, for then you have no reward with your father in heaven. Whatever potential practices we choose for Lent it needs to be practices which help us to deepen our relationship with God and Jesus, and for practices that do not deepen our relationship with God then forget about them. We do well to pass the Holy Spirit for guidance first with what we do not do for Lent and what we do for lent, the Scripture says, “be still and know that I am God” so I would suggest that we do less and be still and allow God to be God in our life.

Reflection: choose wisely your left spiritual practice.

Prayer: The Gospels tell us that Jesus valued in silence and stillness, he often spent the whole night in prayer, he was not talking to God, but he was silent and in the stillness God worked in his heart and soul and transformed him into the man he became. Jesus is to be imitated not worship. Amen
