prayer and trust

Daily reflections: Friday: May 30/14

Gospel: John 16:20... again this Gospel starts with the words of Jesus saying that he\'s going to depart and leave the people and he realizes that they will weep and mourn his departure. Again, Jesus makes a promise which is very often been misunderstood by the people of his time and certainly by the people of our time. John has Jesus saying :”I tell you, if you ask anything of the father in my name, he will give it to you.”This promise is very often been misunderstood and misinterpreted and people feel that if they pray, hard enough and often, that God will grant them their wish. As we get older we soon come to learn that that is not the right interpretation of the promise of Jesus. There are probably many interpretations to those words of Jesus. First, with a prayer to the spirit to know what to pray for, to pray for material things or for more things to buy or win a lottery, such things would not come under this promise. I think what comes out of the promise is to pray for a greater awareness of God\'s divine presence in one\'s heart, to pray for a greater love of God and the things of God, to pray for the grace to love not only one\'s friends also one\'s enemies. I think to pray for growth and transformation in one\'s humanity is another way of interpreting the Scriptures.

Reflection: as you reflect on the promise what do you come to on your own?

Prayer: Spirit of God, I\'m aware of my own needs and the needs of so many people especially those who are carrying a heavy burden, those who are sick, those grieving the death of a loved one, I pray that you teach me I might carry those in my heart with love & thank God for his love for the person and how that love in their life will make a difference. I pray for the grace to trust God in all things. Amen
