Daily reflections: Monday: May 26/14

Gospel: John 15:26... John has Jesus talking about his departure and the warning that he gives to his disciples if they\'re going to be faithful followers of him and carry on his mission. It is a warning that he is preparing them so that they will not be surprised when they are threatened and accused. We read:” the hour is coming when those who kill you will think that by doing so they are offering worship to God.” History tells us how true this morning one... the Christian communities are just a well-established when the persecution began. For the Roman Emperor there was no room in his empire for a new movement that claims first of all allegiance to and loyalty to Jesus or God. There is a saying, “the blood of the martyrs became the seed of the faith.” It seems that the more the Romans killed the more people chose to become Christians and so here we are today.

Reflection: have we become so much a part of the culture that we are no longer presented with any real threats?

Prayer.: Lord Jesus, history tells us that down through the centuries persecution of one kind or another was experienced by your faithful followers. Today I pray, that I, and the church, does not become so mediocre that we are simply accepted into society as one with values of that society. Amen
