common good/private good

Daily Reflections: Tuesday: April 29/14

Scripture: Acts 4:32... in this part of the Scripture we get a view of how the followers of Jesus began to organize themselves not just for the individual God but for the common good. The investment in the common good has been a long time value in Christianity. We read: “the whole group of those who believe were of one heart and soul, and no one claimed private ownership of any possessions, but everything they owned was held in common.” We know that down through the centuries followers of Jesus invested in community living and the common good. However, in the last hundred years, there is bitter breakdown in community living in more and more individualism and what is good for the individual.

Reflection: do you think we could hold all things in common today?

Prayer: As I read the Scriptures I find that the early Christians discovered a way of living in community and held the value of the common good so everybody had enough. I pray that someday we once more see the value in the common good and by social justice make sure everybody has enough, this I pray.
